A 45-year-old woman died after being attacked by a herd of wild elephants in a pine forest in China, police said Monday.

The body of the woman was found near Jinghong city in southwest China's Yunnan province, Xinhua reported.

Police said a herd of at least 14 wild elephants lived near the area where the woman was attacked. The area showed evidence of an attack having taken place, they said.

The rainforests of Xishuangbanna Dai region is home to 250 to 300 wild elephants, and it is common for wild elephants to damage crops or attack humans in the area.

The provincial government of Yunnan has faced mounting compensation bills for damage caused by animals. In 2009, it signed a contract with a private insurer to cover some of the losses.
