New Delhi, April 28 (IANS) As Indian death row prisoner Sarabjit Singh battled for his life in a Lahore hospital, the Indian government Sunday said it would do everything it can to let him come home on humanitarian grounds.

"I think at the moment the first priority is to stabilize him. I don't suppose you could really move him in this stage. But we can certainly do everything we can. We have done it in the past and the matter has been taken up at every level," Minister of State for External Affairs Preneet Kaur told NDTV news channel.

She said the government has always brought up the issue of Sarabjit Singh at every level with Pakistan to let him come home on humanitarian grounds.

Asked if the government has been informed about the reason behind the attack on Sarabjit by fellow prisoners in Lahore's Kot Lakhpat jail Friday, she said: "There has been nothing concrete that we have got to know. As soon as we know, we will share with you."

Doctors at a Lahore hospital have said chances of Singh's survival, who was brutally assaulted by fellow inmates, were "slim". He is in "deep unconsciousness", doctors said.

Sarabjit's family, which reached Lahore Sunday and saw him at hospital, pleaded for help from the Indian government and prayed for his life.
