A woman who was once the Chairman of the Gurgaon Zila Parishad has eloped after stealing Rs 15 lakh, 2 kg of gold and other valuables, her father-in-law told police on Thursday.

Bir Singh, a resident of Baas Lambi village in Gurgaon district, made the complaint against Kavita Yadav to Gurgaon Police Commissioner Sandeep Khirwar.

In his complaint, Singh said that Kavita Yadav eloped on October 17 with cash, gold, land registration papers and more.

Although Singh did not name the person she allegedly eloped with, he said he feared that the man would kill her after grabbing the property, cash and gold.

Kavita Yadav, 35, was elected Chairman of the Zila Parishad in 2010.

"Kavita was married to Ashok Yadav. The couple have two children, an 11-year-old girl and a seven-year-old boy," a police officer told IANS.

"She left her children behind. Kavita's husband has been ill for a year," the officer added.
