around 35 years, allegedly held in captivity by her parents for about four

years in their house in Bangalore was Tuesday rescued by police.

Hemavati, looking dazed and unkempt with long finger and toe nails, was found by police with only a sheet covering her in her small room in Malleshwaram, one of the oldest localities in north Bangalore.

The police shifted her to the National Institute of Neruo Sciences and

Mental Health, about 10 km away in the city centre.

A police spokesperson told reporters that they received a tip off that a

woman was confined in her house and people heard her screams.

The spokesperson said Hemavati's parents told the rescue team that their

daughter was suffering from weakness in her legs for several years and

hence was confined to the room.

The parents denied claims by some neighbours that they had forcibly kept

Hemavati in the room as they were against her plan to marry a man of her

choice.
