A woman jumped off the Howrah Bridge on Wednesday afternoon and a search operation has been launched to locate her, police said.
According to police, the woman whose identity is yet unknown was seen standing on the the bridge pavement before suddenly leaping off into the Hooghly river at around 12.45 p.m.
The river traffic police conducted a search but the woman could not be traced.
"We have looked around for her in the river but could not find the body. Possibly the body has floated away in high tide," said an official.
Police also said that they haven't received any inquiries from anyone about a missing person yet.
