A 60-year-old woman was killed when a strong quake measuring 6.1 on the Richter scale jolted the island of Lefkada in western Greece on Tuesday, the media reported.

The woman was killed when a rock, displaced by the quake, rolled down on her house on the island of Lefkada, according to an official.

Damages to homes and regional roads were reported, Xinhua quoted Christos Katforis, deputy mayor of Apollonion municipality on the island, as saying.

The quake was felt across a large part of Greece. People on Lefkada and nearby Ionian Sea island of Kefalonia rushed out onto the streets.

Local fire department has sent crews to Lefkada to assess the situation.

The epicentre was located 5 km deep in the sea about 25 km off the island's northwestern coasts.

Earthquakes are common in Greece, but serious injuries and deaths are rare. More than 100 people died in a severe quake near Athens in 1999.
