A woman allegedly committed suicide by setting herself ablaze during an altercation with her husband over domestic issues in West Bengal's South 24 Parganas district on Sunday, police said.
"Maya Gayen, 35, a resident of Jibantala area, allegedly set herself ablaze after a quarrel with her husband about their elder daughter's marriage," said Rifazul Mondal, the Investigating Officer of Jibantala Police Station.
"The woman was fatally burnt. Her husband Milan Gayen sustained severe burn injuries trying to save her. He is currently admitted to South 24 Parganas' Canning Hospital," Mondal said.
The parents of the deceased have, however, accused Gayen of setting his wife on fire and lodged a police complaint. The couple had frequent run-ins on various issues, they said.
Police said they have kept the accused under vigil. However, he cannot be interrogated unless he recovers, an officer said.
"The investigation is at a very initial stage. We have kept the accused under vigil based on the complaint we have received," the officer added.
