The work on linking the rivers Ken and Betwa may start by the middle of this year, Union Minister of State for Water Resources, River Development and Ganga Rejuvenation Vijay Goel said here on Wednesday.
Goel said this after chairing the 12th meeting of the Special Committee for Inter-linking of Rivers, and added that almost all clearances have been obtained for Ken-Betwa rivers link.
He said his ministry has identified five priority inter-river links for taking up the work, and that all inter-linking projects should be completed in a time-bound manner.
The meeting confirmed the minutes of the 11th meeting of the Special Committee held on November 9, 2016, and reviewed the follow-up action on the decisions taken at the last meeting.
The other issues taken up included: status of Damanganga-Pinjal and Par-Tapi-Narmada link projects; status of detailed project reports (DPRs) system simulation studies of Mahanadi-Godavari; surplus water in river basin for inter-linking of rivers; status of intra-state link proposals;, and restructuring of National Water Development Agency.
The Special Committee for Inter-linking of Rivers was constituted on September 23, 2014, after the Union Cabinet's approval.
