Chinese President Xi Jinping on Wednesday congratulated Donald Trump on being elected as the 45th President of the US, said a Chinese government statement.
In his message, Xi said that he looked forward to working with Trump.
Earlier in the day, China's Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lu Kang said Beijing was ready to work with the new US government. The remarks came as Trump was inching close to victory.
Lu said China expected to make joint efforts with the new US government to maintain sustained, healthy and stable growth of China-US relations, and benefit people of the two countries and the world.
