Ahead of a historic summit on Saturday in Singapore, Chinese President Xi Jingping and his Taiwanese counterpart Ma Ying-jeou shook hands for about a minute and 10 seconds.

Their meeting at the Shangri-La Hotel was the first between Chinese and Taiwanese leaders since the end of China's civil war in 1949, Channel News Asia reported.

After this, they held a closed-door meeting for about an-hour-and-a-half.

According to sources, the shaking of hands were seen as largely symbolic.
