China's first lady Peng Liyuan Thursday visited a school here.

Chinese President Xi Jinping and and his wife Peng are on a three-day official visit to India.

During her hour-long stay at the Tagore International School, Peng interacted with a select group of students and did some calligraphy.

Peng said: "It is important for all of us to keep learning and work hard to achieve the goal we have set in life."

The school has a distance learning programme with a school in Shanghai as part of which Indian students learn Tai Chi and calligraphy and students in China learn Kathak and yoga.

In a gesture of goodwill, Peng kissed and hugged the children and also gifted them books.

"It was a very encouraging moment for the children. Students performed cultural programmes. Peng was also gifted a statue of Rabindranath Tagore," principal Madhulika Sen told IANS.

Peng Liyuan, 51, is a singer who is popular in China for her patriotic folk songs. She was born to a family of artists in Shandong province. Her mother was a member of a local art troupe and her father was a curator of local museum.

She holds a Master's degree in traditional ethnic music and now serves as the dean of the Art Academy of the People's Liberation Army. She holds the rank of a major general.
