Yamuna rising in Agra

Residents of villages along the Yamuna in Agra have been alerted as its water level rose and was only a few inches below the low flood level Saturday, officials said.

It is likely to flood low-lying areas along the banks Sunday, irrigation department sources said.

Water has already entered some villages. The level Saturday evening was 494.8 feet against the low flood level of 495 feet.

The Yamuna level began rising after copious releases from Gokul Barrage in Mathura and heavy discharge from Tajewala and Hathini Kund in past two days, apart from the heavy rain in the past two days.

District authorities have alerted villages and deputed officials to monitor the rise in the water level.
