A youth who immolated himself at a public rally of Uttar Pradesh PWD minister Shivpal Singh Yadav a few days ago at Ghazipur succumbed to burn injuries on Saturday, police said.
Satyendra Bind, 18, sustained 60 per cent burn injuries and had been battling for his life for the last four days. A native of Kishohari village in Ghazipur district, Bind was trying to meet the minister to petition him about a problem.
He, however, was not allowed to meet the minister and prevented by the security personnel from going to the stage. Incensed, he drenched himself with kerosene and set himself ablaze.
The Station House Officer (SHO) was suspended soon after the incident but no efforts were made to reach out to the youth or his family to find out what his grievance was.
A similar incident had taken place in the high-security zone of the state capital on Friday when a man from Aligarh was stopped in the nick of time, outside Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav's official residence while attempting self-immolation.
