Zero tolerance for corruption does not mean ending corruption totally, Goa state BJP vice president Wilfred Mesquita said Monday.
Speaking to reporters at the Bharatiya Janata Party state headquarters here, Mesquita said zero corruption is impossible in a country like India.
He made the observation when asked about recent remarks by Director General of Police T.N. Mohan that corruption has reached "unacceptable levels" in the police department.
"Zero tolerance to corruption is not to tolerate corruption. Zero tolerance to corruption does not mean to make corruption zero," Mesquita said.
Mesquita also conceded that corrupt practices were still going on in Goa adding that it was Goans themselves who were involved in graft.
"Although we want zero tolerance to corruption, corruption is still there. Ultimately, who is doing this corruption, our Goans only... Government servants are not from outside Goa. That is the pity of it," Mesquita said.
The BJP came to power in 2012 riding on an anti-incumbency wave against the then Congress government.
