Letters: Behind the veil

Fatima Bhutto has done well to pierce the veil of the late Benazir Bhutto in her recently released book titled Songs of Blood and Sword. Bhutto has been projected as a martyr for democracy, but as William Dalrymple (Family matters, April 10) has pointed out, drawing from the book, Bhutto was essentially a dictator, did her best to hurt India’s interests by arming militant groups that were waging war on us, and was perhaps even complicit in her brother’s (Fatima’s father) death — for the record, Bhutto said the ISI was behind her brother’s killing. Bhutto’s husband was known for his corruption and was called Mr 10 per cent.

When will India come out with such biographies? All that we get is accusations that are hurled at various politicians, there are few books on the behind-the-scene activities of the type that Bhutto has written or the ones written on the Clinton campaign (Primary Colors).
