The ironic references by the Opposition to the advent of achche din (good days) or their absence thereof have irked several National Democratic Alliance ministers, among them Venkaiah Naidu, minister for urban development and housing. But he sought to defend the promise embedded in this key election slogan of the Bharatiya Janata Party in a rather unsophisticated manner during his inaugural address at a housing summit in the capital. Speaking in Hindi, his choice of idiom and vocabulary made some in the audience wince. The approximate translation in English would read: "No matter how excited you are after marriage, it will still take nine months to have a kid irrespective of how much hard work you put in." The implication being that the delivery of achche din will take time. Naidu was obviously conscious of the unrefined nature of the comment because he added, "I want common people to understand, that's why I am giving a common example."
