Parents will now rush to buy extra-dark Apsara pencils in hope that their wards will be able to fetch 5 extra marks for good handwriting. After all 100 per cent marks are no more considered good enough.
Over the years, parents have done everything possible to ensure the admission of their children into good colleges, in the hope of securing their future. From expensive coaching classes to moral support at night while their children burn the midnight oil, every help has been extended. Eventually, some of these children have even managed to better their parents'expectations by scoring 100 per cent.
But now, Delhi University’s Shri Ram College of Commerce and Hans Raj College have set their first cut off for admission into undergraduate course in Economics at an absurd 100.75 percent in best-of-four subjects for those who did not study Economics in class XII. Similarly for gaining admission to Lady Shri Ram College, an aspirant needs to have an aggregate score of 100.5 per cent to get into the Psychology (H) course.
Probably there is a need to first check the educational qualifications of those responsible at these colleges to set such absurd cut-offs. We may find some company for Delhi’s former law minister Jitendra Singh Tomar who is in jail for producing fake educational degrees.
Certainly, there are other colleges who have set cut-offs at 100 per cent, and they can take pride in being sensible. General category students have also scored 100 per cent to get admission in computer science programme at College of Vocational Studies and Indraprastha College for women.
And all this comes at a time when a Delhi court has agreed to hear a complaint against HRD minister Smriti Irani over her educational qualification. As a candidate in 2004 elections from Chandni Chowk in Delhi, Irani had declared that she had a Bachelor of Arts (BA) degree from Delhi University. In the same column of the affidavit filed in the 2014 elections from Amethi, Irani claims to have passed Bachelor of Commerce Part-1 from University of Delhi.
That is not all. When questioned about her degrees, Irani boasted of another degree from Yale University, which she forgot to mention in her affidavits. Irani has certainly proved she is a Superwoman. Probably one reason why Delhi University colleges taking a cue from Ms Irani are now looking for Superman to apply for admission at their colleges.
