A critic once said Bengal has lots of Banerjees and Chatterjees but lacks energy. But ever since the “workaholic Didi” stormed into Writers’ Buildings, government employees and journalists seem to be struggling to keep pace with Mamata Banerjee’s energy. After the swearing-in at Raj Bhavan she walked one km to Writers’, causing the administration considerable security headaches. And when all the newspapers almost designed their front pages with stories from the ceremony, she forced them to rework them with significant announcements like returning land to unwilling farmers at Singur. Her first Cabinet meeting to decide portfolios went on till midnight, keeping everyone from officials to reporters on their toes. The pattern didn’t change on the second day, when she met the press three times, each time with a new announcement.
