Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) president Lalu Prasad says his party would not field any candidate in the 2017 Uttar Pradesh Assembly election because the ruling party's chief, Mulayam Singh Yadav, is a samdhi.
Prasad said his party's prime objective was to defeat communal forces led by the Bharatiya Janata Party and the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh and so "the party would work in favour of secular forces in the UP polls".
The RJD supremo's youngest daughter is married to Mulayam Singh Yadav's grandnephew. But, while Prasad would like to keep away from the UP polls, his ally in the grand secular alliance in Bihar, Janata Dal (United), has not closed that option.
Bihar Chief Minister and national President of JD(U) Nitish Kumar has made many trips to UP in recent weeks to attend events related to prohibition.
