Shah spoke for over an hour. There were several occasions when members of the Opposition parties, particularly from the Congress, tried to interrupt him. At the end of Shah's speech, Rajya Sabha Chairman M Venkaiah Naidu spoke about the need to maintain decorum during House debates. He addressed members as "mitron" or friends. To that, Congress leader Anand Sharma reminded the chairman that it was customary to call members "sammananiya sadasyon", or honourable MPs.
