Charges of fraud and financial irregularities are flying thick and fast in the capital’s Press Club of India. The old managing committee has been thrown out at an emergency general body meeting. In its place, an interim seven-member panel has been nominated to manage the club’s affairs. A few days before it was unseated, the old managing committee had sought to rope in the Congress leadership to bolster its cause.

Led by the club’s office-bearers, the managing committee met Congress President Sonia Gandhi. Gandhi promised to help the Club get better accommodation and, most graciously, even became a member of the Club. Upon their return from 10 Janpath, office-bearers and members of the managing committee triumphantly displayed their pictures with the Congress President on the Club notice-board and announced that she had become an honorary member. This did not impress the members who attended the emergency general body meeting.
