Chhattisgarh’s biggest and the only medical college hospital, located in the state capital, was recently equipped with a metal detector. The official story for the installation was the ever-present Naxal threat. But hospital authorities are less concerned with terrorists coming in than assets going out. Staff members were stealing expensive metallic fittings and equipment, according to the hospital’s deputy superintendent Dr Sunil Gupta. The hospital had received complaints and had installed the detector to check this pilferage from within.
