Cheating on your spouse, most agree, is a horrible thing, but this was a novel case. British businessman Robert Charlton, a Reuters newswire informs us, used to buy his wife jewellery each time he cheated on her — after 26 years of marriage, he bought her more than 40 extravagant pieces that his daughter auctioned for $492,400 last month. These included antique diamond ear-rings, bracelets, rings and necklaces — a necklace made up of 54 diamonds was the most expensive item that was auctioned. It appears Charlton’s daughter chose to auction 43 pieces from the collection after other family members declined to accept them following the couple’s death. The family kept the other pieces since, it appeared, he didn’t only buy his wife jewellery after cheating on her — he bought her gifts on her birthdays and Christmas as well.
