Name the food item that frightens Kerala’s political leaders the most. Onions? Wrong, it’s ice cream. These days, politicians across the ideological spectrum are seen declining the confection at public functions and weddings. This new-found phobia has its origins in a ten-year-old sex scandal involving an ice cream parlour and former state industries minister and Indian Union Muslim League politician P K Kunhalikutty. Although Kunhalikutty was declared not guilty by the Supreme Court a few years ago, a sting operation by a local news channel appeared to nail him again. Since the channel has declared that it has evidence that could indict more politicians and members of the judiciary, no public figure is taking the risk of eating ice cream in public for fear of providing the public with an accusatory photo-op.
