The unprecedented dip in India's steel demand and the stupendous jump in coking coal prices are not the only issues the steel ministry is finding hard to explain. At a recent meeting between Steel Minister Beni Prasad Verma and the India head of South Korean steel major Posco that took place in Verma's office, the power suddenly went off. That left half a dozen officials plus the cabinet minister and the Posco representative literally groping in the dark for a good 10 minutes. Eventually, an official had the good sense to open a window and let in some natural light, after which talks resumed. Perhaps the industry could add power shortages to its woes.
