The editorial “Best of a bad bargain” (October 3) is both a sober assessment of the high court verdict on the Ramjanmabhoomi-Babri Masjid title and indicative of a wise course that the disputants could follow instead of seeking justice in the Supreme Court.
Given the nature of the case, even Solomon couldn’t have delivered a please-all judgment. The high court has taken a view that can be the basis of an honourable settlement between the two communities. To move this forward, the first step should be that all parties that are alleged to be involved in the demolition of the masjid should offer to explicitly express their disapproval of the deed and apologise for it. L K Advani has taken the first step and others should now follow.
Next, keeping Ram Lalla’s place as a given, the majority community should graciously accommodate the wish of the minority to build a mosque.
