Letters: AAP's win - Ripple effect

Image

Business Standard New Delhi
This refers to the report "Kejriwal's win might disrupt BJP's House moves" (February 12). It will be really unfortunate if the old and mostly discredited Opposition parties use the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP)'s victory to their own ends and opt for undemocratic methods such as disrupting Parliament activities. Of far bigger import is an answer to the question of whether Arvind Kejriwal's charisma and AAP's anti-corruption and pro-people model have traction outside Delhi.

There are three outcomes that need watching. Will Narendra Modi be able to keep the stauncher Hindutva elements to the fringes or will the Delhi results be used by the ideological and volunteer wings to muscle in more, citing the failure of non-RSS personnel and 'imports' to deliver results? Will Modi continue to push the market-state model over the nation-state model? Will concern for public goods and people's concerns, including environment, forest, land and employment security aspects, minimum needs and so on, get pushed aside to further the economic advancement? And, will there be more democratic ways of governance and economic administration, and not just a coterie of trustworthy peddlers of one leader-one thought-one narrative and a tight club of crony capitalists? Answers to these questions will affect all of India.
