Ratan Tata’s response in the letter “On fairness,” (November 19) to the editorial titled “Name and shame, Mr Tata,” (November 17) was interesting. What offended him more — that he was referred to as “whining and seeking to occupy high moral ground” or, as he put it, the misinterpretation of facts? Also, he seemed to be stressing the context in which he had put his words. Does that mean, if there was no such context, he would not have disclosed these facts?
Why doesn’t Mr Tata start an institution that encourages companies to sign an integrity pact and pledge not to make undue favours to ministers, babus and even mediapersons? After a few top corporations do this, the mid- and small-sized companies can follow their lead. This could be Mr Tata’s defining contribution to the nation.
