This refers to the editorial “Paying the banker” (September 9). Few senior bank officers leave public sector banks and join the private sector for reasons of low remuneration since their biggest worry is job security.
The point is that the biggest perquisite enjoyed by a public sector bank officer is the 100 per cent job security and that is totally de-linked from productivity and output. Therefore, the demand for better remuneration for public sector bankers should be considered along with a provision for the bank management’s right to remove an officer whose performance is poor. Of course, safeguards need to be in place to prevent any misuse of such a provision.
