With reference to Anjuli Bhargava's column, "Overseas degree and job: Double or quits?" (February 9), we do not value our educational system; instead, we continue to lean on foreign universities.
In today's times technological skills and market competition supersede mundane theoretical knowledge. Actually, the amount invested in a purely academic degree is wasteful as it lacks applicability. Industrial products, which include small scale and village units and even advanced crop cultivation for commercial utility, hold precedence over academics.
The government is compelled to frame short-term policies to suit the global commercial environment. In such circumstances how can an academic degree - whether from an Indian or foreign university - be of use? Despite having changed our national economic policies the old examination-oriented, theoretical mindset remains and skills and talents are not tapped in a practical direction.
