Letters: BJP - Keeping a promise?

Image

Business Standard New Delhi
This refers to A K Bhattacharya's column "When tall promises meet big challenges" (Raisina Hill, December 1). When in Opposition, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) had bitten off more than it could chew. Now, as the ruling party, it just cannot regurgitate without a reason. All political parties are wont to making tall promises to win elections. But the BJP had made, among others, the repatriation of black money stashed in tax havens abroad an emotive and prestigious issue. After coming to power, the BJP is attributing its ability to bring back black money to a confidentiality clause contained in the Double Avoidance Tax Agreements signed with foreign countries. But people want to know why the party was not aware of this fact when it wheeled out this promise.
