T N Ninan's column "The law without limit" (Weekend Ruminations, August 30) presents only one side of the issue - the companies that were the beneficiaries of lack of transparent procedures in the allotment of national resources. There is some substance in that, especially when it comes to honest companies that applied in good faith and got the licences without resorting to unfair means. But what about the Indian public? Shouldn't they have a recourse against lax or malafide actions of the government? Shouldn't there be some action, howsoever late and harsh, to deter wrongdoers from indulging in something similar in the future?
The root of the problem is in the extremely slow-moving wheels of our judicial process. If that can be fixed, such issues will not exist since correctives will be applied in good time. The only other alternative is to decree that government actions cannot be challenged in the court of law. Let the people suffer the government they have elected until the next elections.
