Apropos Vinayak Chatterjee’s article “Building blocks” (August 15), I have a few comments to make on the infrastructure projects mentioned:
River linking project: Experts have expressed serious concerns about environmental damage from such a project. Instead of having one big project, why don’t we think of many small projects that could help check floods? Can’t we do something to utilise rainwater?
Jaitapur Nuclear Power Plant: This project needs to be reconsidered not only because the affected people are opposed to it, but also because there are serious objections to it on grounds of safety.
Mumbai as International Finance Centre: The city’s infrastructure is simply inadequate for such a project. There has been continuous deterioration in the quality of civic amenities in Mumbai because of high level of leakage and corruption in all five Municipal Corporations in the Mumbai metro region.
Finally, the land acquisition process for all these projects must be handled very tactfully.
