This refers to Bimal Jalan’s article “Demand and supply of corruption in India” (November 27). One cannot remember a better-worded indictment on the working of the watchdogs of governance in India than “Investigations are carried out, guilt is established, appeals are filed — but nothing much happens after that. Years pass; courts, people and the media soon move on to other cases”.
India has an array of politicians, statesmen, businessmen and bureaucrats who do not face corruption charges. These eminent individuals have a moral responsibility to push for zero tolerance of corruption. If Mr Jalan’s vision of a fully empowered Federal Commission to review legislation for simplification does not work owing to compulsions of coalition politics, I would appeal to him to try and bring together like-minded people to make their voices heard for a cleansing operation of the system. This must be done before it is too late.
