This refers to your editorial ‘Another googly from Google’, February 5. Though Google has steadfastly refused to comment on developments such as G-drive or the offline mailing system (similar to Microsoft Outlook?) it is supposed to be developing, this one company is doing what regulators the world over have not been able to do — to ensure Microsoft no longer behaves as a monopoly.
From the point of view of developing countries like ours, this is very good news. A G-drive to save your data, and a good broadband connection, and users can make do with very low-cost PCs or nettops that are now increasingly becoming available at lower and lower costs.
It is a pity, in this context, that India has put off the auction of 3G and BWA spectrum since this was the country’s best hope to jumpstart the internet revolution that has stalled so badly. The services offered by the government-owned BSNL/MTNL leave a lot to be desired and those provided by private sector firms like Bharti Airtel are still quite costly.
