M Karunanidhi is trying to solve his family problems at the cost of the nation (‘Monopoly politics’, May 23). He is clearly promoting dynastic succession but what about competence? By foisting the untested Azhagiri, who cannot speak either Hindi or English, he is paving the way for his other son Stalin to succeed him in state politics.
The prime minister has reservations about ministers like T R Baalu and A Raja and though he has agreed to give them portfolios, deciding on the portfolios has to be the prime minister’s prerogative.
The brinkmanship on the part of DMK has to be viewed in the context of the DMK government in Tamil Nadu is surviving because of the support of the Congress. The moment the Congress withdraws support, the DMK ministry will collapse — if the DMK withdraws support, the UPA government will not fall. The Congress must not buckle under pressure from the DMK.
