The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has extended the date for surrendering or exchanging pre-2005 issued currency notes to January 1, 2015. In its press release, the central bank has requested the public to co-operate in gradually withdrawing the said currency notes from circulation. However, unless the banks themselves are not serious about this, expecting the common public to co-operate will not serve its avowed purpose. I am mentioning this because I received brand new Rs 100 currency notes from a bank signed by Dr C Rangarajan, who was the RBI Governor from December 1992 to November 1997. I trust RBI will send a strong message to bank branches and currency chests through the respective head offices to sort out the pre-2005 currency notes and ensure that they are not re-circulated.
