Your edit “Securing dam safety” (July 21) was timely. A dam breach would cause heavy damage that could be worse than any train accident. We need to make people understand the dangers of a dam breach. The Mullaperiyar dam in Kerala is more than 100 years old and has quite a few leaks. This poses a great threat to people living in the areas below the dam. The state government is taking action to build a new dam. But building it could take one or two years and until then people cannot be expected to live in the fear of the old dam bursting. The Centre and court should not delay in granting the permission for a new dam.
