“Statistical challenges” (July 14) makes correct diagnosis of the flaws in India’s data collection system. If data are not available or are incorrect, those managing the economy will not get correct signals about the policies they have to formulate. Seasonal adjustment of data, you are right, is important, but it is not as easy as you make it out to be. I have seen various experts coming out with different seasonally adjusted data using the same raw data. If not carried out in a proper manner, seasonal adjustment can give erroneous results.
