Letters: Data worries

Business Standard New Delhi

The ongoing census operations are enough to make one quite nervous. I have had visits from the census people and have shared stories with friends who have had similar visits. It seems officials are not asking all the questions they are supposed to be asking. None of my friends, nor I, have been asked questions about either our religion or about our caste. Yet, the decadal census figures always have data on this. Nor have I been asked questions about my belongings like a car, scooter, and so on; again this is something the census is supposed to capture. If this is the state of things in the capital, imagine what will be captured in smaller towns and villages where the houses being canvassed are not familiar with what the census people are supposed to collect.
