This refers to “The ugly face of Indian news media”. TV in India primarily engages in informing and entertaining, which is welcome, but it also provokes, and at times, misinforms viewers, which isn’t quite welcome. One can’t help but wonder why some channels are exclusively for news and some others for entertainment. Let every channel produce a good mix of all types of programmes so that the clamour for Breaking News by the 24-hour news channels subsides. Also, one major purpose of the media, namely imparting education, has been completely ignored by private channels. Some companies with deep pockets and a sense of corporate social responsibility should set up channels primarily aimed at educating children as well as adults. Such channels can also serve as a “remote school” in rural areas with inadequate schools and teachers. It would help raise a much more educated citizenry and effectively serve our national interest.
