This refers to Subir Roy's column "Designed in India" (Value For Money, October 8). The author has rightly mentioned the advent of Indian manufacturing in the automobile sector, where companies such as Maruti, Tata Motors, Mahindra, Bajaj and Hero have established pure Indian brands in the entire gamut of product development, of which manufacturing and marketing are two important activities. In fact, when we talk about "Make in India" the slogan has to be "Develop in India, for India". This vibe expresses the Indianness of everything in developing a product.
The failings of consumer electronics companies are attributed to their failure to see beyond - in other words, to capture customer behaviour in the right context and extrapolate the same. There was no problem in manufacturing, the issue was more related to product development. We need a correct combination of right design - keeping in mind the Indianness of customers - and the robust manufacturing system with matching infrastructure.
