As rains lashed Tamil Nadu, various parts of the state witnessed floods in which many people lost their belongings. Prices of essential commodities skyrocketed due to scarcity. Twenty-litre water cans were priced at Rs 100 and suppliers, not willing to part with the cans, asked people to pour the water into their own vessels or simply empty the cans.
Moreover, older people who had come walking - because no transportation was available - to collect the water cans could not lift them and returned disappointed. This warrants a redesign of the water cans. Or, manufacturers could sell five to seven litre cans, which can be easily lifted. Also keeping in mind the flood situation, the government could think of making currency notes water-proof.
