Letters: Disband the CBI

Business Standard New Delhi

Your editorial (‘Politicised institutions’, April 30) has rightly said that the government of the day has far too much influence over supposedly independent organisations like the CBI. The so-called independent investigative agency has all along been seen serving the interests of the Congress party by bailing out its friends and nailing down its opponents. Its U-turns in the corruption cases against Lalu Prasad, Mayawati, and Mulayam Singh Yadav are well-known — all these U-turns happened when the Congress party needed the support of these individuals. It is time to disband the CBI and create an autonomous constitutional institution — the Investigation Commission of India — along the lines of the Election Commission and the Vigilance Commission. While the selection of the heads of this body will be the prerogative of the government of the day, the selection panel should include the leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha.
