Apropos Debashis Basu's column "'Minimum government' starts here" (Irrational Choice, March 23), selling public sector undertakings (PSUs) is not an appropriate remedy. The government needs to convert loss-making PSUs into viable, profit-generating units.
Directly and indirectly, pressure is being created to undermine the importance of PSUs for political and business motives. PSUs are in the economy with an aim to meet social objectives too. While infusing capital, the government should not be complacent in recognising the concern of the taxpayers. Many private sector companies are looking for revival and are successful in converting their loss-making units.
The government needs to implement radical remedial actions, including tough measures to weed out the menace of inefficiency. It should not opt for the easy method of winding up PSUs.
