Apropos the editorial "A long hot spring" (March 6), the Election Commission of India has to be appreciated for the efforts it puts in each time to ensure fair and smooth elections. It has emerged as one of the few credible institutions winning the public trust hands down. Around 716 million voters were there on the electoral roll for the 2009 polls, and now that figure is close to 760 million. In 2009, about 59 per cent of the eligible voters cast their ballots at approximately 834,000 polling booths, using 1.3 million electronic voting machines. This proves to what depth the Election Commission needs to do its homework before conducting the general elections this year.
