This refers to A K Bhattacharya’s column “Addressing the energy crisis” (Raisina Hill, September 27). With rising crude oil prices and a burgeoning oil import bill, we are at the threshold of an important foreign exchange as well as an energy crisis. Our oil exploration industry is shrouded in controversies and suffers with too much bureaucratic control. We are still not doing enough to promote solar energy for residential use and our efforts to promote non-conventional sources of energy lack direction and devotion. A feasible policy to conserve oil by revamping the public transport system and reducing oil consumption for cars and two-wheelers are some measures worth considering. A correct fixation of prices of petrol and diesel will also help.
