This refers to the report “Tribal rookies bake branded cookies” (April 28). It was nice to read about the initiative taken by the National Innovation Foundation and its partners to provide tribals with an opportunity to develop and market a product, helping them earn a livelihood. However, I am disappointed with their intention to patent these cookies, which are made with millet and whole grain. Patenting recipes or products made with millet makes no sense and is an unfair trade practice.
Making cookies and biscuits with millet is not an innovation at all in the first place. There are other Indian companies, like Pristine Organics and baCookies, that are already marketing such products in India and are also exporting them abroad.
