This refers to Shyamal Majumdar’s article “How to be a good subordinate” (Human Factor, October 27). My 35 years of experience in government service as a boss at various intermediary levels has been that subordinates are dutiful to a boss who is caring, knows the job more than them, has ability to deliver and doesn’t unduly pull and push them. On the other hand, working as a subordinate even under the top boss of the organisation, I found that the ability to deliver and credibility are factors that decide the attitude of the boss. I always delivered to the best of my capacity and enjoyed a reputation for honesty, straightforwardness and an observer of rules and regulations.
