Business Standard New Delhi

This refers to Sanjaya Baru’s article “Secession of the successful” (July 18). A mere lament from powerful Indian businessmen that the government is adrift and there is a decision-making paralysis will not help. Taking capital abroad is hardly a patriotic response, much less an indicator of social responsibility. It is difficult to understand why businessmen, with much financial power, are unable to force the government to follow policies that are conducive to domestic economic growth. One possible explanation that comes to mind is that there is no unity among businessmen and hence no concerted effort for getting the right policy framework. Most businessmen are probably satisfied using their financial clout to buy favours that benefit their narrow interests rather than those of the business as a whole.
